MY LIFE
I was born in a small town in Colombia, from a low income family. When I was little I loved to draw and write stories and dreamed of becoming a painter and a writer, but those dreams had to wait for long years, because survival was more important than following my bliss. I studied with nuns and then went to university to study Petroleum Engineering, a carrier that was to give me and my family some economic stability. I worked several years in the oil industry and meanwhile I got a master’s degree in International Business. It was working to provide my family in a male dominated business that I met my husband and moved to the United States, where I did not work for a while since I had at the time three little children to look after. It was then, with the children on my lap that I went back to sketching, pencil drawing and learning watercolor. I took lessons at the Glassel School in the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston and started to accomplish my long forgotten dream of becoming an artist. We moved to Calgary, Canada, and there I studied with well known talented artists such as Sharon Williams and Geoff Kepleis and improved my skills with acrylics which I had started in Houston. In Calgary I participated in two group exhibitions: THE UNSEEN ART, 2009, at ART POINT GALLERY, and at CALGARY SCHOOL OF ART, 2010.
In 2010 we moved to Brazil, where I became a member of the Art group called ARTE CARIOCA, with the recognized artists AUGUSTO SOUSA RODRIGUEZ, ANTONIO MEIJUERO and others, doing life model painting and plain-air painting, and working with charity organizations to provide art lessons and life lessons for unprivileged children. In Brazil I exhibit at the gallery of the CENTRO CULTURAL ANGLO AMERICANO, at the ACADEMIA MACONICA DE ARTES CIENCIAS E LETRAS DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO, earning the medal REDENTOR DO RIO, and at the CENTRO CULTURAL DE PIRACICABA.
MY WORK
Painting, for me, is not just a language, but the only one available to express complex ideas and thoughts that will be impossible to express in words.
My passion has been always the human figure, and particularly women alone, nude or not involved in daily, simple activities. My human figures talk about loneliness, not as a vice but as the true nature of life. In their loneliness, the characters talk about simple life apparently inconsequential. It is behind that apparent insignificance that you, the observer, have to find the transcendence in your life. The strong colors and heavy texture intend to show the strong passions that the characters experience, the energy of happiness and sadness, the suffering and ecstasies and all the mixtures that constitute the wonderful fabric of life.
DALILA Y HOLOFERNES: In Dalila y Holofernes, I painted a brave and strong woman, able to overcome the worst and most ruthless vices of life, here represented by the skull. (Both Samson and Holofernes fell under the wisdom and the strength of beautiful women). Dalila is pondering and reflecting, while the skull with its empty orbits questions you about her actions. Dalila does not regret, she is as strong as the brush marks and as bold as the vivid colors that bathe her nude body.
I hope you see in DALILA Y HOLOFERNES, either a reflection of yourself, if you are a woman or of your woman, if you are a man. I LEAVE YOU TO PONDER THE MEANING OF WOMANHOOD!
